Assessing Roof Damage
Storms often bring heavy winds and hail that can tear up your roof, leaving cracks, bruising, flaking, and other types of damage. But how do you know if your roof has been damaged or not?
What Roofers Look For
There are several ways inclement weather can damage your roof. Among the types of damage your roofers will look for are the following:
- Dents and pock marks, caused by hail
- Missing shingles, which may be torn away by strong winds
- Scuffing and flaking, from blowing debris and hail
- Cracked or broken shingles
While this damage may seem superficial, it can lead to long-term effects if left unattended.
Long-Term Effects of Roof Damage
If your roof has been damaged by hail, wind, loose tree branches, and the like, get the roof repaired or replaced right away. Even if your roof is not leaking now, undetected roof damage can lead to serious problems down the road, including:
- Deferred leaking,
- Water seepage and mold,
- Structural instability from water damage, leading to a possible roof collapse.
These problems can shorten the lifespan of your roof or even destroy it in the case of structural instability. Don’t put off a roof inspection!
Will Insurance Pay for It?
One concern about getting roofing repairs done is the cost. If your roof has suffered damage from a severe weather event, homeowners insurance will pay for repair or replacement depending on the level of damage. In most cases, insurance adjusters will recommend replacement if there are more than ten hits per square (a 10’x10’ section, or 100 square feet) or fewer if the roof is over a certain age. Rebuild Texas has in-house insurance adjusters to coordinate these claims, so if in doubt, ask us.
Warning to Homeowners
Unless you have specific training, you should not attempt to do your own roof inspection. Roofing professionals are prepared to deal with the challenges (and dangers) of roof inspections, such as odd slopes, sudden wind gusts, and so forth. At Rebuild Texas, we perform zero-obligation roof inspections at no cost, so there is no reason to risk your own safety checking your roof.
