Early Spring In Sunny Texas
In our last post, we took the opportunity to offer up a few Texas roof maintenance tips for beginners. Whether you are a new homeowner or are used to paying a handyman to get your roof serviced and maintained, we hope you get the chance to peruse our last blog post when you get the chance! In that post, we discussed the specifics related to clearing away tree limbs, cleaning your siding and gutters, along with other essential tasks. Today’s post will pick up where we left off in a way, only this time we are going to be more focused on what every homeowner needs to know when it comes to winter and spring roofing maintenance. If you could use a few tips from a roofing company that knows its way around a roof, by all means, read on!
Texas is a big state, and as such the climate can vary significantly from region to region. But one thing most communities in Texas have in common is that we experience our fair share of storms. Whether it’s in the spring, winter, or otherwise, Mother Nature takes her toll on all of us. That means you need to check your roof for storm damage from time to time — especially after the winter. There is no more important time to do this than after a hail storm, which most of us have been lucky enough to avoid so far. If and when you do encounter a hail storm, you should be sure to check for missing or broken singles across your entire roof. It’s vital to replace these missing or busted shingles as soon as possible so that you can prevent the need to get a roof repair down the road.
We are still talking about roofs here people, so don’t get any funny ideas. Flashing, when it comes to roofing, concerns the thin pieces of waterproof material which get installed to keep water from leaking into your home. Now, this roofing maintenance tip probably requires a basic understanding of roofs; check the flashing on your roof around your skylight or chimney, if your roof has them. Check the vent pipes and other regions of the roof where flashing has been put to make sure that they are still firmly in place. Being proactive about your flashing can save you a large sum of money down the road!
Part and parcel to storm damage is the damage that can come from high winds. Most of us in Texas have to deal with howling winds at some point or another, and it can affect the integrity of our roofs in addition to being a nuisance. After a severe windstorm, you should make a point to check your roof for missing or curled shingles. Again, replace them as soon as you are able to. If there is any debris that needs to be cleared away, don’t hesitate to do so.
Houston is typically much more humid than DFW; this much most people know. But no matter where you live, we’ve found that most people don’t know that the more humid a region is, the more they need to look for moss or algae that has grown on the roof. Too often, homeowners wait until the moss has overgrown because it’s especially noticeable, if not glaring. Why? Moss or algae can become seriously problematic if you let it be — so don’t listen to Paul McCartney when it comes to roofing maintenance. Moss can move from your roof to the siding. If, however, you are in the unfortunate position of finding that the algae have already spread, don’t hesitate to give Rebuild Texas a call to get the problem solved quickly and affordably!
A “spot check” is simply another way of doing a quick scan on your tar and gravel roof. You want to check for any spots that are surface-bare, or exposed. What you want to do is to cover such areas with pea gravel as soon as you spot bare spots. This is an easy fix, and it’s something that will go a long way toward keeping the integrity of your roof intact for as long as possible. If the bare area has already been exposed to precipitation and has become somewhat “spongy,” it might be worth having a roofing repair contractor come out and diagnose the issue for you. When you give Rebuild Texas a call, we offer free estimates and exceptional customer service to boot!
Gutter repairs are less expensive than gutter replacements. Making sure that you catch any minor problems prior to them becoming big problems, however, will cost you a bit of time every now and then. But what can a rookie homeowner, perhaps like yourself, do in order to diagnose any potential gutter problems? You want to check for clogged, loose, or leaky gutters before you do anything else. There might be a drainage issue where the gutters catch the water. If, for whatever reason, you’d feel more comfortable having the experts go to work for you, we’d be happy to come out to your home or place of business!
Fascias and Soffits
Soffits are the metal or wooden panels that run along the roof’s underside. Fascias are the wooden or metal boards that can be found beneath the eavestrough, or along the roof’s lining. Believe it or not, we didn’t tell you that just so you could one day win Who Wants To Be A Millionaire one day, but rather we think you should know that checking these areas typically goes overlooked while performing a routine spring maintenance roof check. Look for soft spots or holes that need to be replaced.
